The logo is your first step!

A friend of mine is setting up a new business. Like anyone in the same situation, his budget – or lack thereof – is guiding most of his decisions. Coming from a financial background, he’s got the business plan and finance under control, but he came to me for advice on branding and the website.

He sent through an email that said ‘I’ve got the name but haven’t figured out the font yet’. I think you could have heard the alarm bells ringing in my head from a block away. His business is a physical shopfront with an online sales component.

He was planning on designing the logo himself. That same logo would be on his signage, business cards and website. It would shape the design of his website and marketing collateral. He was starting a new venture by shooting himself in the foot.

I started my reply by telling him that if he had any budget whatsoever to spend, on marketing or branding, that it should be spent working with a professional designer to create a custom logo. I told him that a designer will ask him to profile his ideal customer and create something that speaks to them.

THIS IN EFFECT IS THE REAL BUSINESS PLAN BECAUSE IT IS BASED ON THE CUSTOMER - YOU ARE WORKING WITH AN END IN MIND!

This forced him to sit down and think about exactly who that person is - also a vital element to effective web design. Once he had a logo that appealed to his target audience, he could afford to start off with a basic web design that continued the branding shaped by his logo.

You might be thinking – shouldn’t your first website have all the bells and whistles? It depends.

While you want to launch with a website that looks professional, starting off with a basic website allows you to work in phases and improve your website according to feedback. You should be participating in social media regardless, which if done correctly, will give you a goldmine of insights into your customers wants and needs.

This is good news for your budget and will allow you to create an effective website later based on real data. Say you’ve been operating offline and you’re taking the first steps to get online. You may already know your customer thoroughly, however, I can guarantee you that there will be unforeseen opportunities that present themselves that you’ll want to take advantage of quickly.

In summary;

• Professionals save you time and therefore money.

• The business logo is part of the marketing plan.

• Set some of the budget aside for a logo and website.

• Your first website should be simple and fast.

YOUR BUSINESS LOGO - Design Makeover.

Keeping your business in the public eye is critical in any economy – especially when times are tough. The best way to make your presence felt is to engage the services of a graphic designer and get cracking on some serious marketing material.

So will a DIY job cut it or is a qualified graphic designer needed? While you may think you can whip up something passable yourself, a graphic designer can really help your business standout. Powerful graphics and an identifiable logo designed by a professional might be the difference between a couple of calls and a couple of hundred.

Quality artwork from a qualified graphic designer helps a business establish themselves as a reputable and legitimate brand. It’s a pretty simple philosophy – if you put that much time and effort into presenting a professional image, then it’s natural to assume you’ll put a similar foot forward when providing the actual service.

On search websites the businesses who have a well-designed logo as part of their profiles are the most successful at winning jobs.

While you might recognise a graphic designer is needed to help your business, you might struggle to find funds. However, with the average hourly rate for a graphic designer around $57, hiring a graphic designer could be more affordable than you might think.

If you’re concerned about a potential cash blowout, make sure you confirm with your graphic designer how long the work is expected to take. As an example, we don’t usually charge per hour, we charge per job.

Don’t forget to also factor in the costs of printing. There are often certain monetary advantages to hiring a graphic designer. As an “insider” in this business they should offer a wealth of beneficial industry knowledge, such as how to get discounted printing rates or even better than that, some design teams will offer you a complete service that includes design, print and web project solution. This will save you precious time and money.

So go ahead and get your business “sexed up” in order to have it stand out from your competition.

EASY STEPS TO ONLINE MARKETING SUCCESS.

Just like a real-time business, the success of your online business is going to be dependent upon good marketing. Whilst having a web presence is your first step, you could have the best website online and find it ineffective without high quality traffic. Here are five steps for creating effective marketing.

1. Develop a plan.
Your online business is no different to any other business. Know what your product or service is and where the need for what you are providing exists. Research your competitors and develop a point of difference. Remember that the Google Algorithm is linked geographically so become the trusted authority in your line of business within your local area. Set some sales targets.

2. Know your target market.
A massive amount of traffic to your site will not help you if there is no conversion to sales. What problem are you solving? Do your potential customers know about you? Do you know who your market is and where to find them? Have you created effective keyword associations and back links?

3. Become the authority in your field.
People buy from someone they trust so build your online reputation through advertising, blogging and offering professional, caring service. Create high quality, content rich articles to build respect and continued interest.

4. Pay attention to branding.
Make sure your real time branding and online branding are aligned. Be clear about the message you are offering. Does your branding make you easily recognisable as an expert in your field of expertise or line of products?

5. Outsource.
If you have the money and are short on time or expertise, do not underestimate the power of professional online marketers. Your time may be better spent working on your business and leaving the marketing of your online business to professionals.

These five simple marketing steps will see you well on your way to success in 2012. Online marketing comes down to having a clear service or product; creating a plan then taking measurable action to achieve your marketing success.

Remember that successful online marketing calls as much for the characteristics of determination and commitment as it does skills so if your time is taken up in other areas of your business consider hiring a professional marketer.

Simple & brilliant logo inspiration

Great design and simplicity require a lot more thought than what the result may initially indicate.

At first we are attracted by the timeless beauty of the design and how it inspires to further create and develop, bringing further excitement and energy. It’s only when you sit down and think how can this be re-interpreted that clients realise how deceitful simplicity really is. Best results are achieved when you invest time, money and energy into working with the right professional teams at the start of any project.

Any fool can add, only a genius can subtract!

This may cost you more in the beginning but the returns will be far, far greater than what you will get from the shallow interpretations you will cop from crowd sourcing services like 99 Designs and printing dumb-down self services like Vista.

In life you always pay for what you get so invest in a one on one real life meeting with a qualified designer and you will benefit in spades. You may even realise that those seemingly cheeeaaaaeap services that are bombarding your in box and browsing experience, are in fact not that cheap at all, they just have a very low introductory offer so as to suck you in.

Talk about deceitful - have you been sucked in?

Any way, please check out these interesting logos and if you feel inspired, contact us.

Does SEO work for you?

Successful Search Engine Optimisation is one of those things that we all need to know about, however, it’s yet something else that we need to do in our ever increasing online strategy.

It seems to me that successful SEO work is based on controlled tests and consistency.

This means that other than a few technical tricks the rest of the work is not difficult. There is no magic key, this work requires everyday diligence and discipline which is better left to the experts who offer it so that you can focus on what you do best which is run your business.

If you want to test the quality of the service supplied then just do a quick Google search and see if you can spot your website. If it’s not there then speak with your service supplier and ask for Google reports & stats.
